Using Chord

Chord mode

Understand activation, completion, and the chord panel.

Enter and leave

The default activation shortcut is Caps Lock + Space. Hold Caps Lock, press Space, and then release Caps Lock while keeping Space held.

While chord mode is active, Chord intercepts input instead of passing it to the focused application. Type a sequence and release Space to execute it and leave chord mode.

Complete a chord

You have two completion controls:

  • Release Space to execute the current chord and exit.
  • Press Caps Lock, keeping Space held, to execute the current chord and stay in chord mode.

The letters in a chord are typed in order. They do not need to be pressed simultaneously.

Follow the hints

Packages can group commands with hints. For example, the Finder package gives g the label Goto, followed by options such as gh for Home and gd for Downloads.

In a TOML file, a hint starts with ?:

[chords]
'?g' = { name = 'Goto' }
'gh' = { name = 'Goto Home', shortcut = 'cmd+shift+h' }

Choose a layout

ChordLayout
0ls or 0lslLeft sidebar
0lf or 0lfbBottom floating panel
0lvCycle between layouts

The selected layout persists across launches. A completed chord remains visible until you start another chord or leave chord mode.

Special keys and longer sequences

Use Backspace to edit input. Special-key notation, insert mode, repeat counts, and macros let a sequence do more than one simple action. See macros and repetition and the full scripting reference.
