Using Chord

Troubleshooting

Get activation, packages, and custom handlers working.

Chord mode does not open

Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Chord is enabled. Follow any relaunch prompt after changing the permission.

To activate, hold Caps Lock, press and hold Space, then release Caps Lock. Space must stay held while you enter the sequence.

A chord does not run

Try 0, first. This protected built-in opens Settings without optional packages, so it helps establish that activation and completion work.

For app-specific bindings, focus the intended application. For packages from a monorepo, verify the package is ticked under Packages to use. Complete input by releasing Space or pressing Caps Lock while holding Space.

Changes do not appear

Run 0,r to reload configuration. If you changed a TypeScript handler, rebuild its package first:

bunx vp pack

Chord loads generated handlers from js/; it does not load src/ directly. Use bunx vp pack --watch while developing.

The wrong package version loads

Review local folders, linked checkouts, standalone repositories, and selected monorepo packages. A local source takes precedence over GitHub sources with the same package name.

The pinned default chords-menu and chords-com.apple repositories take precedence over their monorepo copies. See installing packages.

A custom global chord does not load

Put global bindings and their hints in the root chords/macos.toml. Keep application-specific bindings in their bundle-ID folders. Always single-quote sequence keys.

Do not define commands in the reserved 0 namespace.

A loop keeps running

Use the 0h<ID> command displayed with the loop. To stop all active loops and reload configuration, complete 0,r.
